Industrial Revolution 4.0 – for a Prosperous and Inclusive Human Centric Society

Every Industrial revolution is a turning point in the history. It has brought in a new way of life for people, there was increase in productivity, average income started growing, standards of living also improved.

First Industrial Revolution was more into mechanisation in the early 18th century and was about transition from manual methods to use of machines. Production of machine tools brought in Factory system. We then started having chemical processing industries, Textile manufacturing, Iron production, use of steam power which helped in transportation, railways.

Second Industrial Revolution had technology orientation in the late 18th century and early 19th century. The revolution was seen through applied science innovations like steel, electrification, paper making, petroleum, rubber, bicycle, automobiles, fertilizer, engines and turbines and telecommunications.

Third industrial Revolution from 19th century to 20th century is about digital revolution. The computers and communications technology including Internet has massively influenced people’s way of living, work and communication. Semiconductors, television, communication devices moved from analog to digital forcing industries transform the way they functioned through automation.

These three have motivated people to move from villages to cities and towns and look for a living.

Fourth Industrial Revolution: Now comes the Industry 4.0. This is all about Artificial Intelligence, Intelligent Robots, autonomous vehicles, driverless cars, e-automobiles, 3D Printing, miniaturized sensors, gene sequencing and editing, AR/VR/MR, embedded systems for societies and even human bodies, block chain for governance, quantum computing. This is all about driving opportunities in villages too through disruptive innovations leading to a true Global civilisation.

Technology enablers of IR4.0:

1) Internet access, computing and storage power will be affordable to all by 2020 as per the United Nations goal. This would help people improve their living conditions and escape poverty by giving them access to information, education and global marketplace.

2) Big data: The digital traces of our every action online are stored in servers. AI when applied to this massive data collected would help in building healthy and strong societies. It will not be far when we see AI machines with lot of data stored within sitting as Board of directors in company meetings.

3) Digital Health: Health Data related to diseases, patient conditions, hospital capabilities, equipment available, doctor specialisations can be collated from across the world and best treatment and personalized medication can be provided to the needy.

4) 3-D Printing: This brings together computer design, manufacturing, material engineering, synthetic biology and reduce the gap between makers and users. Consumers can purchase personalized products online, like 3D car as per personal choice or 3-D liver as per patient’s requirements.

5) Internet of Things (IOT): More than a trillion sensors will be connected to internet in a decade. This includes all the cars, electronic appliances like refrigerator and micro wave oven at home, mobiles, devices at farms, machinery in industries, devices like street lights to traffic lights, surveillance cameras, bore wells, water tanks, devices embedded into cattle and may be humans embedded with devices and many more. IIOT (Industrial IOT) will use SOC (System on Chip) solutions and smart devices that can autonomously talk to each other, collect data and run AI programs for better operation of the industries.

6. Block chain Services: This would change the way banks, insurance companies, universities, logistics companies, land and revenue departments work. Fraud will be eliminated. History of transactions will be maintained.

7. Wearable Internet: Implantable and wearable devices would help track our health status- sweat output, heartbeat and breath intensity. We can also locate missing children and old people. We can know information instantly about the location we are at and the things we see. Lot more exciting things are possible.

8. AR/VR/MR: This becomes integral for IR4.0. In a retail store AR mirrors will replace the traditional changing rooms, can replace salesman, attract customers, can show more goods than available in stock. Medical students will learn about surgery without a physical body. The air cabin crew can serve better looking at your mood. Surgeon can have more accuracy and precision. School children can have enhanced learning experience. In hotels, customers can have 360 degree view and a walk through of the rooms. In restaurants, the customers can experience the immersive menu card, where the customers can see what food they will get. Air crafts/ automobiles maintenance staff can fix the issues in less time. Real estate companies can offer 3D modelling and home experience to customers before the construction begins. Logistics companies, sports companies can give an immersive experience of their products to the consumers.

It is evident that dramatic change is happening all around us and it is happening at exponential speed.

Advantages:

  • Transportation and communication costs will drop, logistics and global supply chains will become more effective, and the cost of trade will diminish, all of which will open new markets and drive economic growth.
  • There will be enormous increase in efficiency, productivity and transparency.
  • In the skilled labour market, safety will increase and quality of products will increase and income will also increase.
  • The products will be demand driven and the companies will be forced to adapt the way they design, market and deliver products and services.
  • People will be empowered with access to all the information at hand.
  • Health care will improve with wearable gadgets, lots of data, 3D products, AR based surgeries.
  • Connectivity with anyone anywhere across the world is possible.
Creativity, empathy and leadership will be promoted.

Challenges:

  • Fear of loosing jobs will increase , but then a new set of jobs with new skill sets will emerge.
  • Data Security becomes essential. Every country is all set to implement a cyber security policy.
  • Personal Privacy is important.
  • Discontent can also be fuelled because of information sharing online
  • A few players might collude and data may be misused.
  • Finally , it is all about people and values.

Conclusion:
IR4.0 will blur the boundaries between people, Internet and physical world. It is a convergence of digital, physical and biological spheres. It is a transformation which will affect entire industries and economies and will impact global societies. Perhaps UN will have to revise its SDGs!

Let’s face the mounting change- the 4th phase of IR. India becomes more smarter and effective in promoting socio-economic development. May we leverage the fullest potential of 4.0 IR to build more prosperous and inclusive human centered society. Let us all together help India achieve its dream of emerging as a Global Power and set a replicable model to the developing countries.

Dark Web and the Deep Web

Deep web (opposite of surface web) is that portion of WWW which is not indexed by search engine. It is implemented by a special form of http and can be accessed by normal IP address and URL but the content is access controlled. That means the contents are intentionally controlled. Examples are video on demand and online newspapers etc..,

Dark web is synonymously called  dark net, free net  where illegal activities take place. This is a portion of the deep web.

Several tools like DeepPeep etc have accessed the deep web . Tor (The Onion Router) is one interesting software which can help in accessing some links while preserving personal privacy.

Sri Dakshinamurti Strotram

 Sri Dakshinamurti Strotram

Sri Adi Sankaracharya, the great Guru has composed the Sri Dakshinamurti Strotram to glorify the teachings of Adi Guru Dakshinamurti for destroying the notion of duality by removing Ajnana. While I am trying my best to learn, understand and relearn, I get to understand it differently every time. Hence, I felt,   should write what I understood in the process of learning, so that I will be correcting myself in the process.

While Dakshinamurti is an aspect of Lord Siva, Lord Hayagriva is treated as an aspect of Lord Vishnu with reference to knowledge. Sixteen Dakshinamurtis are referred to in the Saastra. Sastras are the experiences of sages and maharshis.

Removal of ignorance can be done only by Jnana ( providing knowledge). The seeker can seek two types of knowledge: para vidya ( higher / knowledge of the spirit)  and apara vidya (loukika-vyavaharika / materialistic /lower).

Ten verses were composed by Sri Adi Sankaracharya showing his gratitude to Adi Guru Dakshinamurti for giving him knowledge about the self.

The study of this strotram is said to be equivalent to prasthanatrayam: Upanishads, Brahma sutras and Bhagavad Gita.

The following is the invocation verse followed by  the Dakshinamurti Strotram.

Brahma Tattvam is imparted through silence

The ever youthful ( no ageing and fully optimistic nature) Guru who is able to convey the Brahma Tattva through silence. Brahma Tattva is the Supreme Reality-the knowledge which is free from limitations of time, place (spatial context) and property, which exists every where but never in the form of an entity or an object which has attributes or features and descriptions. It is beyond all these,

Who is surrounded by the age old Rishis who  follow all religious rules having an intense desire to learn something ,

The teacher of teachers ( it is the lord who initiated the teaching) who is ananda himself with all glow and radiance of  wisdom, with his hand gesturing chinmudra – index and thumb form a cycle and other three fingers put straight (as scholars say it signifies the identity of jivatma and paramatma),

One who revels within, with a smiling face, such a wonderful guru , I worship him- Lord Dakshina murti.

Knowing the real you!

According to Sankaracharya,  Self is revealed as the consciousness which makes the body and mind sentinent. The conciousness is the Atman. We are different from what we experience. Anatman is the world, Body and Mind. World is an object which is describable, Body is also an object which is describable and Mind is an object of experience that makes us feel its perception and can be described,  so they are all not ‘I’ or the Atman. This is Advaita.

Sankaracharya uses two examples:

  • Darpana Nagari Drishtanta and Swapna Nagari Drushtanta

Darpana means reflection like the one seen in a mirror. If that ‘I’ of you is able to show you the object of this world (Nagari) – a reflection of what is outside, that means you are not part of that world or part of the image as you are able to see that image as a third entity! In that case we have three entities here: the object (world) you are trying to see, the object (the reflection image of the world – Nija Antargata) you are seeing and the object (the seer-or yourself or the ‘I’). There is something beyond all these, that something is helping you do all the these three. The chaitanya or that energy or the reality that which is not describable and all the above three are not possible without this.

Like an illusion is felt , an image seen during the dream (Swapna) when asleep, and image disappears once you are awake

The Guru teaches the real nature of you, the Atman, the single Entity ‘I’ -the Advayam, the mother Object, which encompasses all other objects.

My salutations to such a Gurumurti who is embodied by Sri  Dakshinamurti.

Like the seed (Beeja) unmanifested and looked still before  the sprout from it has manifested into tree in the future dimensions of substance, space and time (both by maya),

the universe is unrolled by Him and is projected like an object / world  with more and more varieties of pictures created and overlaid  due to maya with substance, space and time dimensions, of course from Brahman again and again in a cycle -punah (karma-srushti-karma). Maya is inherent in Brahman.

Like a magician (mayavi), the Maha Yogi can spread this projection at his will,

My salutations to such a Gurumurti who is embodied by Sri  Dakshinamurti.

In a way Sankaracharya emphasises the significance of thought and how powerful sankalpa-the will and manifestations of the thought can be.

The pure existence-Satt-the truth-tat and pure consciousness-chit-tvam are one and the same

He, on whose ignition (sphuraN) causes the light which shows the universe to be real,

the Maha Vakya- Tat Tvam Asit, as told in the vedas is made known to the seekers, that, that is you (I)  is the truth

Punaravruti ( the cycle, begin-end-begin) is put to an end,

My salutations to such a Gurumurti who is embodied by Sri  Dakshinamurti.

When a pot has a light inside and can spread it in several directions through the several holes on it,

Jnana (light) , from within is spread through the eyes  the world outside can be felt, the Jnana that initiates the senses to be functional,

He, through whose knowledge helps in realising who I am,

My salutations to him, the  Gurumurti who is embodied by Sri  Dakshinamurti.

As the viduh (people who know) say with a wrong perception the body, life, senses, Mind, Intellect and sunya is the I,

their interpretation is worse than women??, children, blind and the ignorant,

He who destroys this vyamoha (the delusion) created due to Maya sakti,

My salutations to him, the  Gurumurti who is embodied by Sri  Dakshinamurti.

?? The interpretation ‘worse than women’ is explained as emotional dominance and a personality which overpowers intellectual faculty!

Being in deep sleep is not being in sunya sthiti (emptiness)-there is existence

Like the Sun or the Moon during the eclipse, are veiled by Rahu graha, and still have their functionalities intact after,

In the sleep, like all the senses are withdrawn, as though existence is veiled by maya, existence prevails during the state, and

after awakening, the one who remembers he slept well, One who awakens the consciousness of the self,

My salutations to him, the  Gurumurti who is embodied by Sri  Dakshinamurti.

Sankaracharya projects that though in sleep state, no transactions are done, yet there is pure existence. It is just a transition from jagrut avasta (state) to  sushupti avasta (state). In sushupti  (deep sleep) state all the instruments -sense organs, body and life are withdrawn. I Swapna or jagrat states, these instruments are functional along with maya which is active then. These are all the states of the body, and there is existence all through these states.

The tatva of Atman is described here clearly,

By sravana (listening or studying ) to the meaning, manana (reciting or reflecting what is studied), dhyaana (meditating or assimilating), sankeertana (glorifying),

one can realize the oneness with Atman, the Divine essence with the profound  knowledge,

and attain the eightfold manifestations of Siddhis (Godhood) while experiencing the bliss, gain extra ordinary powers rather…

There are several good books and commentaries written on Sri Sankaracharya’s work -Dakshinamurti Strotram: Manasollasa by Sureshvaracharya and Tattva Sudha by Svayam Prakasa and Ramatirtha [1].

Time Travel

Here is an interesting link on Time Machines for traveling into the future !

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_travel

Just imagine if the cosmonaut reaches the earth back a few seconds late or a few seconds earlier than targeted time 🙂

Yes, visualising two points in space is fine, visualising connection between two points in time! Wow… Can we ever experience it!

Intellectual Property Rights

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are to protect rights of owners so as to prevent unauthorised use or sale of IP.

Normally we come across three terms called discovery, invention and Innovation.

Discovery is about finding something which is existing already. Invention is about building a concept or an entity to help solve the societal issues. Innovation is all about conceiving something new, conceptualising it, building, validating and commercialising.

IPR Types (WTO agreement)

  • Copyright
  • Trademark
  • Geographical Indications
  • Industrial Designs
  • Patents
  • Integrated Circuits
  • Trade Secrets

Patent: A Patent is a grant given by the state in the form of a certificate for disclosing an invention by which certain exclusive rights are confered on the patentee which can be exercised in the country which grants the rights for a limited period.

Safety Measures while making online payments

Just gave a general talk on digital payments and safety measures. Thought would put them here…..

Safety Measures to be taken while using Credit/debit card

Identity theft

Some one can spoof your identity and gain access over your account. He might have known your password or your personal information through which he could reset your password.

Credit card / debit card /online banking

Some one must have got your PIN number, password in addition to your card number.. A few cards are also cloned. Phishing is one popular attack. An SMS or email or whatsapp message is sent with a link placed in it. That link when clicked would take you to web site where you are forced to feed information. Sometimes malware gets inserted in your computer or mobile through which important information can be stolen or deleted. Sometimes phone calls are made asking for information like credit card number, PIN, passwords etc on the pretext that you have won an award or got a lucky draw. This is called Vishing. Skimming is another technique through which credit card numbers are acquired either through copies of receipts or through small electronic devices. Never fill forms of lucky draw in malls.

Sometimes people come to you offering help in feeding information in ATM counters. Do not believe them. See that there are no strange devices connected to the ATM machine.

Keep changing your PIN frequently, do not expose last three digits of your card. Register your phone number and keep checking your transactions.

When a vendor swipes your card, keep an eye on him, an be present at the machine when transaction happens.

Use https web site for transactions and see the stamp that the web site is trusted.

Report immediately if you lost the card. Never throw the card after you get a new card. You tear it of into pieces. When you do online banking, don’t forget to log off.

Do not use unknown computers and free wifi to access your online account.
